There is just under a gigawatt of battery storage on the grid operating today. In addition to the almost 1 GW of BESS, Ireland also has 292 MW of pumped hydro at the Turlough Hill site in County Wicklow, which has been operating since the 1970s.
The Dublin Energy Hub, housing the largest battery, serves as a testbed for the future of clean energy in Ireland. It is envisioned as a hub for integrating various green technologies, including offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, all working together to power a sustainable future for the Emerald Isle.
The Poolbeg Battery Energy Storage System in Dublin went into operation in November 2023 and has the capability of providing 75MW of fast-acting energy storage. It is located at Poolbeg Energy Hub where we plan to deploy a combination of clean energy technologies, including offshore wind and hydrogen over the coming decade.
We plan to develop a pipeline of large scale battery projects, as well as additional renewable enabling technologies. This is crucial to supporting the balancing of the grid and will facilitate even more onshore wind, offshore wind and solar onto the electricity system in the coming decades.
