The Consortium for Battery Innovation is the only global pre-competitive research organization funding innovation in lead batteries for energy storage and automotive applications.
Battery storage costs have evolved rapidly over the past several years, necessitating an update to storage cost projections used in long-term planning models and other activities. This work documents the development of these projections, which are based on recent publications of storage costs.
Demand and types of mobile energy storage technologies (A) Global primary energy consumption including traditional biomass, coal, oil, gas, nuclear, hydropower, wind, solar, biofuels, and other renewables in 2021 (data from Our World in Data 2). (B) Monthly duration of average wind and solar energy in the U.K. from 2018 to 2020.
Development directions in mobile energy storage technologies are envisioned. Carbon neutrality calls for renewable energies, and the efficient use of renewable energies requires energy storage mediums that enable the storage of excess energy and reuse after spatiotemporal reallocation.
In this work we describe the development of cost and performance projections for utility-scale lithium-ion battery systems, with a focus on 4-hour duration systems. The projections are developed from an analysis of recent publications that include utility-scale storage costs.
